The seven-goal winning margin matches our biggest Youth Cup win in history, while it is the first time we have scored eight or more in the competition since 1997 – one better than the seven we managed against Wolves last season.

Lewis Bate is this year’s competition captain and after a feel of the armband in last year’s final. He is delighted to lead the team this season.

‘It's an amazing feeling to captain Chelsea in the Youth Cup this year. I had the armband in the final earlier this month through Tino Anjorin’s absence and it was an honour then,’ he told the official Chelsea website. ‘Today was a proud feeling and it was great to captain a good bunch of boys.’

Chelsea were three goals ahead at half-time thanks to 16-year-old Jude Soonsup-Bell’s clinical finishing inside the area, he later added a fourth and Bate had nothing but praise for the youngster’s performance and revealed the message at the break was to be ruthless in attack.

‘I have to give a big shout out to Jude, he stepped up to lead the line and has been on fire for the Under-18s this season so I’m not surprised with his goals,’ he said.

‘At half-time the message from Ed [Brand] was simple, we just had to keep doing what we were doing, not get complacent and be ruthless in front of goal - I think we did that and sent a message to the teams in the competition, it was a big statement.’

After second-half goals from Tino Livramento, Ben Elliott and Harvey Vale put Chelsea out of sight of Barnsley, Bate himself joined in on the scoring act in injury time with a sweet strike from 30 yards which arguably wins the award for goal of the game.

‘There were about 30 seconds left of the game and I called Joe [Haigh] to head the ball back to me, I didn’t think he would but when he did I just hit it as cleanly as I could,’ explained Bate. ‘Nine times out of 10 that’s probably going out of the stadium but it came off and I’m happy with the goal.’
