Blues 'look better without Havertz' - Merson

Paul Merson has advised Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to keep Kai Havertz on the bench despite a return to fitness as the side ‘look better without him’.

The German missed three matches entirely for the Blues after testing positive for Covid-19 before returning to the bench for the Champions League trip to Rennes as the club won all four matches.

"Chelsea have found the right blend up front without Kai Havertz in the team and he might find himself on the fringes now," Merson told the Daily Star, as per the Mirror.

"It’s so competitive there now that if you find yourself out of the team it could be hard to get back in.

"Havertz has missed a few games because he tested positive for coronavirus, and Chelsea have won them all.

"They’ve had Tammy Abraham up front and Timo Werner playing wider, and it has suited them. It looks like their best system.

"Havertz wasn’t pulling up any trees before he missed those games. He’s a young lad who needs time to settle.

"I wouldn’t throw him back in against Tottenham because they look better without him right now."

Blues fans praise team spirit

Chelsea have a big first-team squad with competition for places high across the club but the players still support each other and back each other.

That has been highlighted by a number of Blues fans, who noted how Tammy Abraham and Jorginho celebrated after the midweek win at Rennes.

Olivier Giroud scored the winner late on in France with Abraham sprinting onto the pitch after the full-time whistle to congratulate the striker, for whom he is competing for a first-team spot.

Meanwhile, Jorginho could be seen clenching his fists in celebration, showing his passion following the triumph.

Full Chelsea squad for Spurs clash

Christian Pulisic returns to the Chelsea squad for Sunday’s clash against Tottenham after missing the last five games with a groin problem.

The Blues have no fresh injuries or suspensions, with Kai Havertz hopeful of pushing for a starting spot in the side.

There may be a concern about the involvement of Billy Gilmour, who has been out since July with a knee injury.
