Chelsea tore Sheffield United apart in the last match before the international break thanks to some standout performances by players in blue.

In a game where Chelsea dominated the entire match, hardly anyone put a foot wrong. The Blues went a goal down early in the match, yes, but it only seemed a tiny pebble in the avalanche of goals that followed. It was a complete performance all around, but here is how the team performed on an individual level against Sheffield United:

Edouard Mendy (Goalkeeper): 7

For the most part, a quiet game for Chelsea’s new keeper. While the clean sheet streak was broken, Mendy still performed in ways he was expected to. He was commanding in the air, vocal with the back line and assertive when making routine saves. The Senegalese’s importance to the team cannot be understated.

Reece James (Right back): 8

Every game that passes it is harder to ignore how good Reece James is, and how much better he can become. James outplayed, out bodied and outsmarted every player he clashed with. His offensive abilities are only outshined by his defensive acumen. James is improving with every game he plays as he is demonstrating how invaluable he is for the club.

Kurt Zouma (Centerback): 7

With everyone performing incredibly well, Kurt Zouma was probably the one who did just above average. It’s not that Zouma was bad, but he was not great either. He misread a couple of plays and left one or two spaces open. Nevertheless, his performance was good, which lead to Chelsea not conceding more than one goal. Zouma’s partnership with Thiago Silva is proving fruitful. His potential is finally being fulfilled.

Thiago Silva (Centerback): 9

A great performance all around. Silva scored a fantastic headed goal and his outing screamed experience in every way. Silva is proving to everyone that age, when backed with a great team and a great manager, is just a number. The Brazilian was calm and collected when defending and even stepped into the midfield from time to time. His goal was glorious as no one saw it coming but him. The way he got away from his defenders and got into the open space to head the ball in the back of net was all about his game awareness and veteran experience.

Ben Chilwell (Left back): 9

It isn’t news or even opinion anymore, Ben Chilwell was Chelsea’s best signing this season. Chelsea was in need of a left back who was great in the attack, and even better in the defensive department. Once again, Chilwell provided both options for the Blues. This isn’t just about the goal, but also about his positioning, speed and firepower. He seemed to have all areas covered and no attack could get past him. This isn’t new anymore though, Chilwell has set a standard since coming to Stamford Bridge.
