Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has blamed the Stamford Bridge floodlights for blinding Jorginho after his error led to Jadon Sancho scoring for Manchester United.

Jorginho was Chelsea's last defender after Bruno Fernandes had hammered the ball clear from the egde of his own area, but as he watched the ball drop he took a poor touch and Sancho stole possession.

The United winger skipped past the hapless Italian and showed excellent composure to beat Edouard Mendy and give United the lead against the run of play.

Jorginho showed nerves of steel to step up and take Chelsea's penalty to level the scores after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had fouled Thiago Silva, but Tuchel had a bizarre excuse for his midfielder's first mistake.

"It’s very unusual a mistake like this and to concede a goal like this for us in general, especially with Jorgi," he said.

"He misjudged the situation and he was heavily disturbed from the lights so did not see the ball in the end. It happens.

"It takes a lot of courage and personality to not be affected during the match and have the courage to take the penalty for the equaliser in the crucial moment."

Chelsea dominated the game at Stamford Bridge but they struggled to create clear chances against a well organised United rearguard, although Tuchel felt they deserved to win.

"If you watch this match it’s hard to imagine you can [not win] it, but it’s dropped points," he said.

"We were the better team and the team who set the rhythm and intensity. We’re disappointed but we have no regrets, this can happen in football. It doesn't feel good when it happens but it’s like this. I trust the team and I’m happy with the performance and the way we played."
