Manchester United were back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon as they travelled to face league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

United won their first match under caretaker boss Michael Carrick against Villarreal earlier in the week but know a much improved performance will be needed for their clash against Thomas Tuchel's side.

United have lost five of their last seven league games but head into the match having won three of their last four away matches against Chelsea, they'd won just three of their previous 25 visits to Stamford Bridge before this.

In terms of team news, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane will both miss the match through injury while club captain Harry Maguire is suspended. Cristiano Ronaldo is on the bench while Phil Jones has been named in a league matchday squad for the first time in 650 days.

Manchester United's changes in the dugout are starting to pay off

David de Gea was the saviour and there was a counter-attacking goal. Manchester United's domestic homage to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's management extended to a winless result, although they will view this as a progressive stride.

Michael Carrick could approach the away end at full-time knowing he would not be treated to a reception his predecessor received eight days earlier. The United fans serenaded managers past and present.

With Solskjaer gone, United are a different entity and, on early evidence, perhaps Solskjaer should have been more receptive to the ideas of his rookie first-team coaches who coached the players on a daily basis.

Carrick could not quite repeat the tactical triumph of Villarreal. United deliberately allowed their opponents more dominance but were clinging on during phases of the first and second-halves. Chelsea will rue Romelu Lukaku's injury that reduced him to a cameo and Timo Werner's profligacy.

De Gea reacts to draw

David de Gea spoke to Sky Sports after the draw.

"We already improved against Villareal, we won, qualified and now we played a very good team away from home. The effort of the team was very good. They had the best chances. For me it is not enough, a draw. We are in a tough moment. I am proud of the effort of the team.

"On the pitch, in the goal, I was feeling danger for nearly the whole game. We defended well, they missed big chances and the one they give us a chance we score. It is not enough to draw but at the moment it is a big point.

"The last games before we were conceding three or four goals. We are improving. This is just two games. At least now we are defending well. We are fighting for every ball. We are a team."

Pundit reaction

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been speaking to Sky Sports

"They’ve created more than enough to win the match and they will be disappointed about that.

"If you look at how many shots Man Utd had on their goal, they had none. They made it 1-0 by mistake and if you don’t take your chances, that’s what can happen.

"You have to be clinical when you have those chances."
