Timo Werner wanted to join his 'favourite' side Manchester United before he moved to Chelsea last year, a report has claimed.

Werner, 25, was a part of ex-Blues boss Frank Lampard's spending spree which included signing Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy.

The forward was scoring at an impressive rate for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga and after he bagged 34 goals in the 2019/20 season, Chelsea snapped him up for nearly £50m.

He could currently be at a different Premier League club, though, as United had reportedly made a proposal to his agent to get him to make the switch to Old Trafford.

That's according to BILD, who obtained a report by Der Spiegel from 2019 which reportedly shows that a contract offer was made by the Red Devils to the German international.

This was communicated via a message on WhatsApp which is said to have put a salary of just under €15m on the table, to which his agent responded "we'll see".

At this point Werner told his advisor Murat Lokurlu that United were his "favourite" but Chelsea were "great alternatives".

Liverpool were also in the running as per the report with Jurgen Klopp holding a 'secret meeting' to discuss a potential deal with his compatriot.

This took place at the start of 2019 and the conversation concluded with an offer of a five-year contract with a basic yearly wage of €12m, plus €25m possible in add-ons.

An earlier report from Der Spiegel also revealed Bayern Munich had agreed a move, showing just how in demand Werner was.

Ultimately, it was Chelsea who won race, but Werner has not found his new home the easiest of places to settle into.

And that has led to considerable links with a move to Bayern once more. A recent report claimed there was a '70 per cent' chance of a deal happening in the upcoming transfer windows.

Since missing out on Werner, United have gone on to sign Amad Diallo, Edinson Cavani, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo for their attack, so they have more than made up for it.
