Chelsea made £86m bid for PSG defender this summer – but have a rock solid defence without him

Chelsea’s defence has been superb this season, carrying on right where it left off last term.

But it turns out that the club still tried to strengthen further in the summer. We all know about the Jules Kounde pursuit, which was widely reported and all but public.

But now Get French Football News are reporting that we had bid £86m for PSG star Marquinhos.

It sounds like Thomas Tuchel was keen to get his former charge back under his wing, and it’s easy to see why. He’s a top tier defender, who would have slotted in nicely alongside our current options.

Having said that, we had a brilliant record last season and it’s looking just as good this term, with Trevoh Chalobah replacing Kurt Zouma as a rotation option.

Would spending that cash really have been necessary? We reckon Romelu Lukaku upgrades this team a lot more, that’s for sure.
