Chelsea has established itself as one of the best clubs at developing youth talent anywhere in football. The Blues’ academy has produced some genuine world class prospects in recent years. There is no team in the world benefitting more from that evolution than the Blues, who currently have a number of academy graduates within their first team. Trevoh Chalobah, Andreas Christensen, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Reece James, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount have all gotten action this year under Thomas Tuchel and look to help the team lift more silverware in 2021/22.

There are also two other academy graduates in training: Lewis Baker and Charly Musonda. Neither looks to play a significant role for the side this season, so you’d be forgiven for forgetting their presence at Cobham on a daily basis. Whereas the former is seemingly stuck with Chelsea until January when he can make a suitable move away, the latter has something up his sleeve. Musonda recently hinted at an upcoming move, leading to a lot of speculation amongst the Blues faithful.

Chelsea winger Charly Musonda will reveal his future plans  ‘very soon’

Musonda teased an announcement within the near future in a recent post to his Instagram account. He also made it known that he’s back in training and fully fit. Musonda missed the majority of Chelsea’s preseason after he contracted COVID-19 on the Blues’ visit to Ireland. It’s unknown how large of a role he would’ve played if healthy, but anything is more ideal than the hand he was dealt. This is especially true for a youngster as he’s trying to work his way back to full health for the first time in years.

The 24-year-old’s Coronavirus absence just added to the list of long unfortunate setbacks he’s suffered throughout his short career. It wasn’t too long ago that Musonda was being advised by doctors that he’d never play football again following an injury he picked up at Vitesse. He’s worked his way back slowly but surely, and the fact he’s going to be on a competitive pitch again soon is nothing short of remarkable. Injuries have plagued what was considered to be a very promising career for all intents and purposes. Despite being just 24, Musonda has played for some of Europe’s biggest names such as Chelsea, Celtic and Real Betis—the future is still bright.

It’s unknown what his next move will be, but his options are extremely limited given his current situation. The transfer window slammed shut in most of Europe on August 31. Musonda was unable to find a move on deadline day, likely due to his questionable fitness. Nevertheless, he does still have options in a handful of leagues around the world. Any football is better than no football. This is especially true for someone like Musonda, who is supposed to be in his prime.

There is also the possibility of a mutual split between the two sides. The Belgian has less than a year left remaining on his contract and it wouldn’t surprise anybody to see him want a fresh start. If he were to become a free agent, it’d open up doors for him all across the globe as he wouldn’t be under any transfer restrictions. No matter who Musonda plays for next, whether on loan or a permanent switch, it’ll be incredible to see the winger get back out onto a pitch. His career path has been similar to Marco van Ginkel’s. Van Ginkel is finally healthy and playing football back in The Netherlands and it’s a wonderful thing. It’s so easy to root for him after the challenges he’s overcome. The same goes for Musonda, regardless of what the future holds for him.
