  • Chelsea is being linked to a massive transfer swoop for Federico Chiesa
  • Liverpool is said to be also courting Chiesa
  • The Italian winger has made his mark in both club and international football

Chelsea may have been ready to splurge a lump sum of money for one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus attacking partners.

Thomas Tuchel has proven that he didn’t need to sign a mega-expensive player to win a UEFA Champions League title with Chelsea.

However, there have been rumors swirling around that the Blues might consider adding a couple of reinforcements heading into the new season.

One of the potential signings being linked to a move to Stamford Bridge is Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, per Sport1’s Florian Plettenberg.

According to Plettenberg, Chelsea is among the big-name English Premier League clubs that has already tabled a whopping €100 million ($139 million) bid for Chiesa. The other team that has also made an offer was Liverpool.

Despite the enticing offers, the respected journalist said that Chiesa is keen on staying at Juventus.

"Liverpool and Chelsea made a bid for Federico Chiesa,” Plettenberg exclusively told Sports Illustrated’s FanNation. “Chelsea 100% bid €100 million, I don't know the amount that Liverpool bid. Juventus turned down the bids and Chiesa wants to stay at Juve."

In relation to Plettenberg’s report, Juve had already rejected the same amount of bid for Chiesa from Liverpool, Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport noted.

It is still unclear when the Reds made the said proposal but the report stated Juventus isn’t interested in letting Chiesa go as the club sees the attacker as pivotal to its project in the coming seasons.

Chiesa joined Juventus in October last year, on loan from Fiorentina. Some were skeptical about his game but he made quite a name for himself in Juventus this past season after being tagged as Ronaldo’s new “sidekick.”

The Italian finished the last campaign with an impressive 15 goals and 11 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A outfit.

Prior to his first season with Andrea Pirlo’s side, Chiesa was already playing some of the best football of his career.

In the 2019-20 season with Fiorentina, the 23-year-old recorded his Italian top-flight career-high 11 goals and six assists.

Aside from club football, Chiesa was also a key figure in the Italy team that had just won the European Championship.

The right-footed forward ended the prestigious tournament as his nation's joint top scorer with two goals, recording a remarkable 2.4 shots on goal and 1.3 dribbles per game--the second most of any Italian player.
