The moment Hakim Ziyech beat Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno to the bouncing ball, a second Chelsea goal appeared inevitable. Yet the Moroccon star had other ideas.

Ziyech opted to delay his finish and instead cut back onto his right foot. It was a move that put Callum Chambers on the floor but wasted vital seconds. By the time he did release his shot, Ben White had charged back and managed to block the ball from rolling into the empty net.

Thomas Tuchel in the Chelsea dugout was not happy. Not at all. Perhaps that's because the German has seen that level of profligacy throughout his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Ziyech wasn't the only man who failed to take a good chance at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.

'Anything Can Happen' - Chelsea's Chance Of Signing Haaland

Timo Werner wasted one in the opening period and Callum Hudson-Odoi was denied by Leno after brilliant work down the left from the 20-year-old. After the break, both Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi were guilty of spurring opportunities.

Somewhat harshly, the focus was on Werner in the post-match press conference. Yet again Tuchel was asked whether he was concerned about the forward, who was signed for £49.5million from RB Leipzig last summer.

The Chelsea head coach gave a stern reply, but there was a caveat thrown in at the very end of his comments.

"It's very hard with the first 45 minutes after a tough week that we put into the players, it's not easy for the players to like at this kind of level," he said.

"I was happy. He was dangerous and there were chances when he could've been more decisive. He could've scored and got another assist. So it's a bit the same as last season. But we have just started, it's not the moment now to worry."

Tuchel is right, of course. Pre-season isn't the time to draw major conclusions, especially when the majority of the squad have trained for less than two weeks. Players will become sharper, both mentally and physically, in the coming days and weeks.

However, Tuchel's concern over his side's ability to be clinical is long-standing. Understandably so. According to numbers from Opta, the Blues left more than nine goals on the table in the Premier League after the 47-year-old took charge at Stamford Bridge in late January.

It's why Chelsea have spent this summer in pursuit of a new forward.

Top of the shortlist is Erling Haaland, although striking a deal with Borussia Dortmund in excess of £150million has so far proved, to nobody's surprise, problematic. Romelu Lukaku is an alternative and the Athletic have reported Chelsea have had two bids for the Belgian turned down by Inter Milan this summer.

A deal being struck for Lukaku can't be ruled out entirely, even though the 28-year-old is happy and settled in Italy. A move for Harry Kane can as Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy would rather sell the England captain to any other club than Chelsea.

That all leaves the Blues somewhat stuck in limbo at this point of the transfer window. There are alternatives across European football, but whether they are huge upgrades on the attacking options already available to Tuchel is a genuine point of debate.

Chelsea's need for a ruthless forward was again displayed at the Emirates yesterday. They've got the best part of a month to bring one to Stamford Bridge. Fail to do so and Tuchel's touchline frustrations may grow through the 2021/22 campaign.
