Newly-promoted Norwich have their sights set on signing Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour on loan for next season, according to reports.

The Blues academy graduate burst onto the scene in 2019/20 campaign with multiple standout performances but then suffered a long-term knee injury which halted his progress.

Upon Gilmour’s return to fitness in December 2020, he struggled to get back into the team and has been used sparingly by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

A number of clubs are said to be interested in acquiring the Scotland international’s signature on a season-long loan deal, with the MailOnline reporting that Norwich are particularly eager.

Canaries boss Daniel Farke wants to add Gilmour to his squad for next season, but the 2020/21 Championship winners will face competition from Premier League opposition including Newcastle and Southampton.

Gilmour was a standout performer for Scotland in their 0-0 draw with England in the Euro 2020 group stages.

However, the 20-year-old was forced to miss his country’s final group game against Croatia after testing positive for Covid-19.

Scotland bowed out of the competition following a 3-1 defeat to Croatia at Hampden Park on Tuesday night, which saw them finish bottom of Group D on one point.

Gilmour earned rave reviews for his display against Gareth Southgate’s side earlier in the tournament, with Gary Neville admitting he is technically better than England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

‘He came into a cup game against Liverpool in his first game [for Chelsea] and he was brilliant,’ the ex-England defender told ITV Sport.

‘His temperament is fantastic, he accepts the ball, watching those clips, it’s a sobering experience for England.

‘Gilmour was always available, England don’t have that player.

‘People might point at Kalvin Phillips but he is not as good on the ball, at accepting the ball, as Gilmour. Technically, he’s a little bit better.’
