Discussions between UEFA and the government over moving the Champions League final from Istanbul to London have hit some significant hurdles, while a number of the governing body's corporate partners are unhappy about the potential of club football's biggest game being moved to the opposite side of the continent with little more than two weeks' notice.

Chelsea's showdown with Manchester City on May 29 is still likely to be moved from the Ataturk Stadium because of Turkey being added to the UK's travel 'red list' last Friday but it is no longer certain that Wembley Stadium will host the fixture.

Today's talks centred around capacity being increased for the game, to between 20,000 and 25,000, along with travel exemptions for visiting media, corporate partners and UEFA bigwigs. The Times reported that Wembley hosting the game "was now very much in the balance" because the government is unwilling to relax restrictions to the extent requested by UEFA.

Fresh negotiations are likely to take place but UEFA are looking at hosting the game in Porto as an alternative. Portugal was moved to the UK's 'green list' on Friday, meaning several thousand supporters will be allowed to travel. Porto also held the UEFA Nations League finals in 2019.

Some of the competition's sponsors are frustrated by the plans to take the game away from Istanbul having already made expensive commitments.

The opening ceremony, which has become a significant investment from Pepsi in recent years, is one point of concern for UEFA's corporate wing. Dua Lipa and Imagine Dragons have been part of a multimillion-pound spectacle that attempts to imitate the Super Bowl half-time show in recent years.

Other sponsors have spent heavily on accomodation and travel for guests in Istanbul.

No other venue in England is being considered despite reports saying Tottenham Hotspur Stadium or Villa Park could play host.

Should Wembley still host the game, the EFL would be willing to delay their play-offs by 24 hours as reported by football.london this morning. The Championship clash, which could involve Brentford, is set to take place on the same day as the Champions League final.

UEFA names its host cities three years in advance. Wembley was due to stage the game in 2023, with Saint Petersburg next year and Munich in 2024. If London was to host the game this month it may just swap with Istanbul. If Porto stage Chelsea versus City the timescale may simply be delayed by a year.
