Barcelona put on a brilliant display to beat Chelsea 4-0 to win the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history on Sunday.

An own goal by Melanie Leupolz gave Barca the lead in the first minute, and Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen also got on the scoresheet in a pulsating first half.

Chelsea’s switch to a more direct style saw an improvement in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Catalan club from coasting to victory.

For Emma Hayes, the nature of a first-half performance will be a huge disappointment - but the Chelsea boss will no doubt use the pain of this defeat as a learning experience for both her players and herself.

The Blues are still looking to complete a treble season by adding FA Cup success to their Women’s Super League and League Cup titles, but Champions League glory belongs to Barcelona tonight.

Hayes wants to use defeat to build back better

Hayes wants Chelsea to use the pain of tonight as motivation next season.

“Listen, we have won the double so it is not like we are trophy-less but I am gutted we didn’t get the chance to make a game of it.

“I said to the players, ‘Look at the scoreboard’ - and that has to be a motivating factor when they come back into pre-season because this result will stay with them over the summer.

“I felt calm coming into the game and I thought some of the inexperience cost us but they will grow from that and improve from that.

“I know I have a quiet dressing room now, but they are proud of the shift they put in.”

Hayes: ‘We showed some naivety’

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes admitted her side were naive tonight.

“Today was difficult because the game was over before it began and that is what makes it difficult to reflect on,” Hayes told BT Sport.

“The players gave it everything. Barcelona are worthy winners and deserving of their title. We will learn from it because this is the next step and we showed some naivety at times.

“You have to stay in the game against this team, and the early goal and the manner in which we conceded it and the penalty, and we were 2-0 down.”

Hayes says “everything fell for [Barcelona]... but they made that happen”.

Barca were first to every ball, and though they did get the rub of the green, fortune favers the brave - and it certainly did tonight.

Emma Hayes is speaking to BT after the game and is choosing her words carefully.

She says “the damage was done” early on, and congratulates Barca as “worthy winners”, but says her players showed “naivety” at times - all fair points.
