Chelsea have lifted the Women's Super League title for a consecutive season and they did so in an emphatic 5-0 win over Reading.

Heading into the final round on Sunday both the Blues and Manchester City could get their hands on the trophy with City needing Chelsea to lose their match against the Royals - but Gareth Taylor's side had no such luck.

Chelsea came out the blocks firing as Melanie Leupolz scored from a corner within the first 70 seconds of the game, the fastest goal in the league all season.

Once Reading had dealt with the shock of the early score, they built into the match and continued to press the hosts.

However, the pairing of Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby struck gold just before half-time to see the latter double Chelsea's lead.

The goal was the duo's 50th score where one assisted the other this season and the pair weren't finished there.

Kerr set up Kirby again in the 56th minute and 14 minutes later Kirby assisted the Aussie international to score to sign, seal and deliver the title for the Blues.

While the WSL was in their hands, Chelsea didn't give up and Scotland star Erin Cuthbert scored the team's fifth of the afternoon.

The trophy wasn't the only thing the club had to celebrate as Kerr claimed the league's Golden Boot and keeper Ann-Katrin Berger won the Golden Glove.

Winning the title will give Emma Hayes' side the confidence they need to head into the Women's Champions League final against Barcelona next Sunday.

At the other end of the table, Bristol City suffered heartbreak as they were relegated to the Championship after a hard fought battle.

Either City, Villa or Birmingham City were going to suffer relegation on the final day of the season but a 3-1 loss to Brighton dealt City the short straw.

The relegation will sting even more this season as the league have secured a record broadcasting deal for the 21/22 campaign.

Full WSL final day results:

Chelsea 5-0 Reading

Birmingham City 0-1 Tottenham

Brighton 3-1 Bristol City

West Ham 0-1 Manchester City

Manchester United 2-0 Everton

Arsenal 0-0 Aston Villa
