They say you shouldn't kick a man while he is down.

Well, it appears that Mateo Kovacic didn't quite get that message in Chelsea's 1-0 win over Liverpool on Thursday night at Anfield.

The Blues outfought and outplayed the defending Premier League champions thanks to Mason Mount's superb individual strike.

Chelsea are now back in the top four and their triumph inflicted a fifth successive competitive home defeat on the Reds for the first time in their history.

New manager Thomas Tuchel has transformed their ailing Champions League qualification hopes as they have picked up 18 points from a possible 24 since he took over in late-January.

Only Manchester City (24) have picked up more points in the Premier League in this period.

Tuchel's men are now unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions and will look to extend that run against high-flying Everton at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

But one moment from the game that did not get much coverage at the time has been spotted by some eagle-eyed supporters on the ChelseaFC Reddit page.

It's titled: "Funniest part of the game apart from Rudi's karate kicks".

The short clip shows Liverpool's Sadio Mane hitting the deck and sliding forwards, with substitute Kovacic in close attendance.

As the Senegalese international continues on his trajectory, the Chelsea midfielder appears to try and clear the ball.

But in the end, he fires it straight at the downed Mane and the ball hits him square in the face - something the forward didn't like at all as he squared up to Kovacic straight afterwards.

Some of the Chelsea supporters on the Reddit page appeared torn over the incident.

ItsKaiTime posted: "Can’t say I feel sorry for Mane there but it definitely looked like an accident in real time."

newbie_saibot commented: "Ferguson would told that Mane could lost his head off, if you know what I mean."

shercoder said: "Not really. That’s a foul and a yellow."

And Redzone_313 added: "Na there was absolutely no need for that."

Either way, Mane and Liverpool will be sore for more than just that as they are now battling to make the top four.

This is a far cry from last season when they won the title by 18 points and had gone 68 home league matches unbeaten before their current run started with a defeat to Burnley at Anfield in January.

After the win, Tuchel said: "I'm super happy. If I'm honest I still have regrets about the draw against Southampton because I am not happy we dropped two points and the way we dropped them.

"But in general, I'm absolutely happy. From the first day, I've felt part of the club and involved in the team.

"It's been a pleasure to coach the team from the first minute because I can feel the energy and attitude to all the things that are needed in a football game.

"They ready to play as a team, to attack as a team, they are prepared to fight and sacrifice for each other.
