Yesterday Toni Rudiger turned 28 and marked the occasion by surprising staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with cakes and drinks to say thank you for all their hard work over the past 12 months.

It has been nearly a year now since England entered lockdown and the doctors, nurses, and support staff at hospitals all over the country have worked tirelessly to try and save lives during the global pandemic. As a token of his appreciation, our defender donated sweet treats to the hospital nearest Stamford Bridge, just a few hundred yards down the Fulham Road from our home.

Rudiger: It's important to give something back

Rudiger has already shown his philanthropic side during the pandemic, supplying food to the Berlin hospital he was born in for three months, supporting other German hospitals at Christmas and also helping fund the cost of masks in Sierra Leone, the country of his parents.

'I just wanted to say a big, big thank you,' started Rudiger in a video message to the Chelsea and Westminster.

'We all cannot thank you enough for what you’re doing in these difficult circumstances. That’s why on my birthday, I just wanted to share little birthday cakes and soft drinks with you as a little appreciation of the work you are doing and will do.

'I hope things will get better, and I wish you and your families all the best. Stay strong, keep doing what you’re doing because you’re doing great work, and you are the heroes.

'Thank you for everything and take care.'
