Maren Mjelde praised Chelsea Women’s character following our 3-0 victory over London rivals Arsenal.

The Blues bounced back from our 2-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion with an impressive performance against the Gunners at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday evening. Two goals from Pernille Harder early in the second half put Chelsea into a 2-0 lead before Fran Kirby sealed the three points with a goal in stoppage time and speaking at the full-time whistle, Mjelde applauded the immediate reaction from the team. She said: ‘We hate losing and I think we showed that today. Playing Arsenal, as I said to the girls before, it’s the highlight of the year because it’s always a good game.‘It’s intense, it’s a derby and we love to play the derbies, so it was really good today.’

After Harder put her side 2-0 up just before the hour mark, the Blues had to withstand some pressure from the visitors and Mjelde, who made her 100th appearance for the club against the Gunners, was delighted Chelsea were able to earn our eighth clean sheet in the league this season. She added: ‘We go into every game wanting a clean sheet. It’s important, especially for us as defenders and the goalkeepers to get the clean sheet.‘I think it’s a long time since we’ve had a clean sheet against Arsenal so that is another good thing that we can take with us into the next game. It was a brilliant team performance.’

Mjelde and her Blues team-mates will now turn their attentions to Bristol City on Sunday and the defender believes it is vital Chelsea follow up our victory against Arsenal with another three points when we travel to the West Country this weekend.‘We got a little bit of a wake-up call and now we are in it again,’ admitted Mjelde.‘We have another important game again on Sunday. It’s been busy for us this month, but for us now I would rather do that than have one game a week because game day is for me and the team the highlight of the week.‘It’s going to be good going into the international break after Bristol, we need to do our job and then it will be good for the team to calm down a bit and recover well before the next part of the season.’Sunday’s game against Bristol kicks-off at 3pm and you can watch it live on the FA Player.
