No surprise that Chelsea chase major central defender

Chelsea are planning to activate the second year of Thiago Silva’s contract to keep him at the club, but will also consider making a major move for a central defender this summer.

That’s according to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, in their Chelsea newsletter today. He writes that apart from Silva, who will get his second year, and Kurt Zouma, every other central defender could leave if the right offer comes in.

It shouldn’t really surprise anyone that this is the case. While they’ve strengthened almost everywhere else, the club haven’t got the long term Silva replacement they’re looking for. Zouma looks great playing alongside a more dominant player, but can’t really seem to play that role himself yet.

So if the right player is on the market this summer, and players like Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen can be sold, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if we try and get a big name defender sooner rather than later.
