The Chelsea board have stepped in.

As much as some Chelsea fans like to run from it, the truth is that Frank Lampard isn’t as great a manager as he comes across. From a neutral perspective, he is incredibly overrated and has not achieved much at either Derby or Chelsea, but rather kept both clubs at a stalemate.

Well, that’s my opinion anyway. Chelsea over the last few decades have seen enormous growth and achievement, showing it’s possible with financial backing and the help of a caring and great board that share the same objectives as the fans.

With that being said, it doesn’t surprise me to see Roman Abramovich and co disheartened by Frank Lampard’s recent shortcomings. According to a new report from Sky Sports, the club’s owner is looking at the option of bringing back Avram Grant to help Lampard.

More from Chelsea FC

Grant and Lampard endured a healthy player and manager relationship in the earlier stages of Lampard’s career, as they reached a Champions League final together in the 2007-08 season.

This is telling of the board’s position on Frank Lampard. Although things aren’t going his way, they are willing to stick by him and to provide him with the means to succeed. This is a different position for the board to take since they have oftentimes been blamed for being too ruthless with their managerial carousels in the past.

Lampard is certainly the long-term plan at Chelsea. But don’t get it twisted. The board aren’t the kind to let the club be on a drastic downfall. They have seen many great managers leave with no sentimentality in the past, including Antonio Conte and, of course, one of the best Jose Mourinho. If this strategy doesn’t go to plan, in my opinion, it could be the end of Lampard at Chelsea.
