Billy Gilmour tells Lampard he can play in two roles

Billy Gilmour’s long road back from injury is finally at an end, and it’s time for Frank Lampard to start thinking about how he can get the youngster into his first team plans again.

He had excelled before lockdown in two starts playing in place of Jorginho at the base of midfield in a 4231, but since then Chelsea have switched to more of a 433, with N’Golo Kante deepest and Jorginho on the bench.

In quotes picked up by Football.London, Gilmour offered himself as capable in both positions, hopefully improving his chances of getting more starts going forward:

“I don’t really have a preference. I enjoy playing both positions. I’ll happily do whatever I’m asked to do because I know that I’ve done both in my career so far,” Gilmour explained.

“When you’re playing deeper, you’re more likely to go and receive the ball from the defenders, dictate play, create opportunities and also protect the defence,” he went on.

We can see both versions working – Kante deep with Billy playmaking further forward, or Kante allowed to roam and press higher up with Billy keeping an eye on the defence.

The important thing is giving him the chances to start and prove that he’s up to it all over again.
