It appears Chelsea will not be signing RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano this month.

The defender has been linked with a move to the Blues, who have been tipped to challenge the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid for the 22-year-old.

Chelsea spent more than £200million in the summer on new arrivals, Frank Lampard strengthening his defence with Ben Chilwell at left-back and Thiago Silva at centre-back, albeit the latter joined for free.

Silva has impressed but Lampard has been unsure on the Brazilian's best partner amid a difficult start to the season for the Blues, Kurt Zouma getting the nod more often than not.

Amid Chelsea's disappointing start to the campaign - currently, in ninth place in the Premier League - reports claimed Lampard could look to sign highly-rated Leipzig star Upamecano. But it seems that will not be the case with the young centre-back going nowhere this month.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has said Leipzig are not open to a sale this month, but clubs do still have an option to land him through his release clause.

"RB Leipzig are not open to sell Dayot Upamecano in January," Romano tweeted. "He’s expected to leave the club next summer - many clubs interested and set to open talks with his agent. The release clause value is €42m."

That £37.8million release clause is one that might tempt one of the many big clubs mentioned above, but Chelsea are not likely to spend that amount of money during this window having invested very heavily in the summer.

In fact, departures appear to be more likely and even at centre-back with Lampard confirming Chelsea are open to Fikayo Tomori's departure on loan.

“The situation with Fikayo is open at the moment,” he said.

“There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. So that would have to be the solution for him and the club.

"That was part of my thinking of not starting him today (vs Morecambe).

“I gave him some minutes at the end but while we were looking at that I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for the club and for him and individually. So that’s why he didn’t start.

“But his attitude, even though he hasn’t played much recently, has been fantastic in training and in how he is.”
