Chelsea shut academy building after coronavirus outbreak

Chelsea have closed their academy building because of a serious coronavirus outbreak,

The Athletic were the first to report the scoop today, giving some interesting detail on how things had gone down over the weekend.

The important thing to bear in mind is that the first team building is still open, and there have actually been no cases in recent weeks from the Blues’ first team squad.

The academy has clearly been hit hard though, and there are a number of youngsters in 10 day isolation now.

The youngsters who joined the first team “bubble” for the FA Cup game – including Tino Livramento, Lewis Bate, Tino Anjorin and Marcel Lewis, should have been protected by their separation from their youth colleagues, and they will presumably now just take a rest and wait for their teammates to recover.

It’s not a disaster, but it shows how unavoidable the effects of the pandemic are at this stage, no matter how cautious an organisation is.
