Frank Lampard explains how the 4-3-3 with two 8s can be more dangerous than using a number 10

There has been a lot of talk of formations and tactics recently as we all assessed and discussed Chelsea’s recent poor form.

Many people, myself included, have been looking at potentially using Kai Havertz as a number ten and trying a 4-2-3-1 formation against some opposition. This also gives more defensive stability against the better sides, as well as keeping Havertz advanced where he looks much better.

However, it appears that Lampard is sticking to his guns and looking to perfect the 4-3-3 formation, something he has been working on since he arrived at the club. And for that, I can only say fair play.

It can be a devastating formation when used right, and Lampard has been explaining that with his 4-3-3, he is using two number 8s, and this can become more dangerous than using an orthodox number 10.

As reported by Sports Mole, Lampard was speaking after the Morecambe win yesterday.

He said:

“I’ve heard some people talk about the system with two eights as though they have to run in straight lines up and down the pitch,” said Lampard.

“It doesn’t have to be that way when you have players with different qualities like Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante.

“These players play in different ways and arrive between the lines and sometimes into the area inhabited by an orthodox number 10.

“And that can be more dangerous than a number 10 that just stands there all day. They can be, for me, more dangerous, but those are the things that need time.”
