Chelsea ‘looking’ at Tomori loan, which prevented start against Morecambe

Chelsea’s lineup and matchday squad yesterday was a cause for some consternation (even more so than usual), and while most of that was due to the surprising complete absence of any youth debutants, Fikayo Tomori being named only to the bench was also noteworthy. With Andreas Christensen injured, Tomori had been expected to start alongside Antonio Rüdiger. Instead, it was Kurt Zouma, who leads the team in minutes, getting the nod once again.

So what happened there? As head coach Frank Lampard explained afterwards, it had something to do with the transfer market, wherein Tomori’s looking to find himself a better situation than he’s had at Chelsea in 2020.

“Situation with Fikayo is open at the moment. There is a possibility he could be going on loan to get games somewhere else. So that would have to be the solution for him and the club. That was part of my thinking of not starting him today.

“I gave him some minutes at the end but while we are looking at that I wanted to make sure it was the right thing for the club and for him and individually. So that’s why he didn’t start. But his attitude, even though he hasn’t played much recently, has been fantastic in training and in how he is.”

Newcastle United have been credited with the most interest thus far, and with Christensen’s injury supposedly not too serious, it sounds like Tomori’s going to be on the move very soon.

Hopefully just temporarily on loan.
