Frank Lampard explains why Fikayo Tomori didn’t play against Morecambe

Chelsea played a strong team today in their FA Cup third round game against Morecambe, but there was still room for plenty of rotation.

At the back however, Fikayo Tomori was still not able to get a game, continuing a season where he’s been totally frozen out.

After the game, Frank Lampard was asked about his decision – what future for Tomori, if he can’t even get a game here?

As the Chelsea boss explained in quotes picked up by the Athletic’s Simon Johnson, the reason the central defender didn’t play today was that a loan move is being arranged for him, and it wasn’t worth risking an injury.

It does make some, but on the other hand, what are the odds that a central defender gets hurt in a stroll in the park against League 2 opposition? It all seems a little overprotective, but what’s important is that whatever move is arranged is done quickly, and poor Fikayo can go and start playing ASAP.
