Chelsea are on course to book their place in the FA Cup fourth round this afternoon.

At half time, the Blues, who were beaten 2-1 in last season's final against Arsenal, led League Two side Morecambe 2-0, with Mason Mount and Timo Werner getting themselves on the scoresheet.

Mount opened the scoring on 18 minutes, drilling a low, powerful effort beyond the reach of Shrimps goalkeeper Mark Halstead.

Then, just before the half-time whistle was blown, the Blues doubled their advantage through Werner's ninth goal of the season, ending his run of 12 games without a goal in the process.

The Germany international poked the ball home from close range after Kai Havertz, one of six changes made to the starting line-up by Frank Lampard, nodded Hakim Ziyech's cross back across goal and into the path of Werner.

Frank Lampard on Kepa's Chelsea future

With both players having struggled for form in recent weeks, the confidence they will have gained from linking-up to score, regardless of the opposition, will be huge, and hopefully a turning point in their fortunes.

After joining the Blues during the summer from Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, respectively, Havertz and Werner were backed to cause havoc for Premier League defenders this season, with Havertz tipped to be the Blues' architect-in-chief and Werner a lethal predator in front of goal.

Whilst it is fair to point out that Werner ended his goal drought against League Two opposition, it will have come as a major relief to him have finally ended his drought in front of goal.

And Werner's return to the scoresheet has sparked a reaction from the Chelsea fans, with no shortage of them delighted to have seen the German get back amongst the goals as a result of work by fellow summer recruit Havertz.

Having gone so long without a goal, Lampard will be hoping that Werner's return to the scoresheet can signal the start of a productive run of form in front of goal.

As well as that, Lampard will also be hopeful that Havertz can start to sprinkle his creative magic on the Chelsea team in the coming weeks and months.

The Blues now lead 3-0 thanks to Callum Hudson-Odoi's fifth goal of the season.
