Chelsea plan to join race for RB Leipzig defender

Chelsea are reportedly planning on joining the race for Dayot Upamecano’s signature in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Upamecano has put in excellent performances in defence for Leipzig and it is reported that he is in demand amongst the elite clubs in Europe including Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. (DailyMail)

The French defender, valued at £50 million (transfermarkt) has a release clause amounting up to £40 million (BILD) that activates next summer after he extended his contract at the German club till 2023.

Frank Lampard recruited the veteran defender Thiago Silva last summer to shore up the defence for as long as he is able to, but given his age (36 years), they are in the lookout for long-term replacements.

At only 22 years of age, Upamecano is already a top international defender, but he still has a lot of potential for improvement and further development.

The Blues can do much worse than signing a defender of the quality of Upamecano who would fit right into the young and talented squad that Lampard is assembling at the Bridge. The fact that Upamecano has a release clause of only around £40 million should also make signing him fairly straightforward, much like the signing of Timo Werner from the same club last summer.

A potential partnership with his compatriot, Kurt Zouma is a mouth-watering prospect for both Chelsea and France fans.
