Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa after Frank Lampard rang the changes following the Boxing Day defeat by Arsenal.

James Robson gives his verdict on how they performed.

Edouard Mendy 5

Some question marks in recent weeks over his distribution, which doesn’t look as assured as when he first arrived. Poor handling almost handed Matty Cash a first-half chance.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Given a tough time by Jack Grealish and struggled to contain him. Provided decent penetration high up the pitch.

Andreas Christensen 6

Didn't look entirely happy with the ball at his feet as Villa looked to close him down. Was caught out in the build-up to Villa’s equaliser.

Antonio Rudiger 6

Tested by Villa’s crossing and set-pieces, but generally held up well with some important headers.

Ben Chilwell 8

Really positive performance, constantly pressing forward. His cross led to Giroud’s opener and a number of other chances for Chelsea.

N’Golo Kante 6

Shifted to a No8 role and brought high energy, as is expected, but not enough in the way of creativity. Some important interceptions when switching back to a holding role.

Jorginho 6

Impressed Lampard when coming on at Arsenal and provided control in midfield – but as Chelsea pushed for the win, he was sacrificed.

Mason Mount 8

No surprise he held onto his place and was full of energy despite the quick turnaround. Dangerous drives into the box stretched Villa.

Involved in the build-up to Giroud’s opener – but should have done better with a first-half chance.

Callum Hudson-Odoi 7

This feels like a chance for him to force his way into Lampard’s plans. Linked up well with Pulisic and Giroud as part of a lively front three.

Olivier Giroud 7

He just loves playing against Villa. That’s 10 goals in 10 games against them and another statement of intent from him.

Christian Pulisic 7

Really bright going forward. Should have done better with two first-half chances, but full of dangerous intent.

Timo Werner (Giroud, 72’)

The run goes on. Had one real sight of goal, but fired over.

Kai Havertz (Jorginho, 72’)

Some nice touches around the box without penetrating.
