Chelsea have reached the final week of January with their title hopes all but extinguished but there are still four pieces of silverware up for grabs, including the Carabao Cup and Club World Cup in February.

Before the window opened, with the Premier League still in their sights, Thomas Tuchel inidicated he expected a quiet transfer window. So it has proven 25 days in and yet the club could still bolster their options in the next six days, particularly at full back.

"We are not in talks right now that we bring in players, because first of all we trust our squad, and hope that we can bring all our players back and be in full strength," the head coach said last month.

"Then we have a strong squad and a good atmosphere to protect. This is where we are right now."

But the good news should should the right player suddenly become available between now and Monday evening is that the club can spend big without breaking financial fair play restrictions - they have £241million at their disposal before taking those regulations into account and could splurge more if some fringe players were to be moved on.

Yet recent history also indicates that the West London club have been among the quietest in the Premier League when it comes to winter business.

Since bringing in Ross Barkley, Olivier Giroud and Emerson Palmieri four winters ago, the only piece of January activity was confirming the acquisition of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

But that was made with the club’s impending transfer ban approaching and he did not join the team until the following summer.

There were no arrivals whatsoever in the past two winters, in addition to 2017, with the only other notable activity in the past decade coming in a busy 2014 and 2012.
