Chelsea claim new signing is for their development squad – and could debut tonight

News broke on Friday afternoon that Chelsea are signing a left back – but excitement in the fanbase quickly turned to disappointment as it was quickly briefed that it was going to be a player for the academy team.

Dylan Williams has now arrived at the club from Derby, and just in case you were still holding out hope that the Blues considered him a first team player, their announcement on the club’s official website rather rules that out.

His arrival is recorded in the academy section of the weekend’s roundup, and Chelsea write that the 18 year old “joins our development squad ranks.” That should mean there’s still a good chance we sign someone else to back up Marcos Alonso for the rest of the season.

They even note that he’s eligible to play in tonight’s game against Man City, although that’s hard to imagine. He’s barely unpacked his travel bag.
